Although Chiang Mai is regarded as Thailand’s second city, the contrast with Bangkok is quite extreme. With over 700 years of history, Chiang Mai is famous for its art and culture and the pace of life here is slower than Bangkok. Northern Thailand’s laid-back charm make it a popular wedding and honeymoon destination. If you are planning on getting married in Thailand, then Chiang Mai is an excellent choice. In most cases, couples would normally have to spend some time in Bangkok to complete the paperwork to make the wedding legal. However, there are numerous consulates in Chiang Mai, including American, Canadian, Australian and British who might be able to deal with much of the paperwork for you. We stress the word, might, because each consulate has their own rules and regulations. Some wedding planners in Chiang Mai may have local agreements in place with different consulates which may cut down on the need to spend time in Bangkok. If you plan on marrying in Chiang Mai, we would advise contacting your consulate in Chiang Mai to obtain their advice
