Prior to getting married in Thailand (a civil marriage), the following documents have to be obtained from Finland:
- An original copy of a multilingual Certificate of No Impediment (a certificate of the right under Finnish law to enter into a marriage contract before a foreign authority) from the register office or parish of the place of residence
- The names and addresses of two Finns residing in Finland as a reference
- A passport
- The address and occupational title.
After the aforementioned documents have been presented at the Finnish Embassy in Bangkok, the mission will prepare a certificate for marriage in Thailand. The certificate will be written in English and 30 euros per piece will be charged for it, payable in the Thai currency, baht, based on the valid exchange rate confirmed by the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Clients are served at the Embassy from Monday through Friday from 8.00 to 11.00.
After the Embassy has granted the certificate, the client has to have the certificate translated into Thai and to take it to the Thai Foreign Ministry (Administration for Legalization, Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign for legalisation before the marriage is performed. After the marriage has been performed, the marriage certificate has to be translated into English and legalised at the Thai Foreign Ministry (Administration for Legalization, Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The legalised documents must then be taken to the Embassy for certification. A copy of the certificate costs 30 euros and it has to be paid in the Thai currency, baht, based on the valid exchange rate confirmed by the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
At the Embassy, the client is also asked to fill in a form entitled Notification of Finnish national married abroad, which will be forwarded to the relevant authorities in Finland and entered in the population register.
